jonathanpham:

Love is hardly ever fair, but that doesn’t mean we should suddenly degrade ourselves to make the playing field more even. You know, if a person can’t decide between you and someone else, and they expect that you “prove yourself” in some way, you would be a damn fool to play their game. Cliché but, it’s important to remind ourselves of our worth, our value, the integrity that makes us the strong people we should be. There comes a time when you’re going to have to be able to differentiate between a lover and a person simply exploring his or her options; in this case, you and and someone else. The unfortunate truth is that some of us spend so much of our time fighting for people who have lost, or never had to begin with, the sight to acknowledge our efforts, that in turn, we ultimately fail to lose sight of ourselves as individuals—the causation of brokenness, insecurity, and the imprisonment of our will to try for love simply because it could be a waste of time, a lost cause, or more sacrifices taken for granted once again.

Keep those standards soaring, but leave room for natural imperfections. Some of us have learned to find comfort in roaming solo, and some of us occasionally have a feeling of yearning for a relationship, a kiss, a two armed hug—the simple rituals of an intimate relationship. My advice is: do as you will. But don’t cling to the idea that a deceiver, a liar, a cheater, or a failing lover embodies the rest of the world. The truth is, chivalry amongst men and women is very much existent, but many individuals fail to prevent a broken mind from burying it alive. Do not allow one person to be the reason why you can’t produce a smile in the face of attraction. Yeah, keep it classy, keep it chivalrous; live like a man, or a woman; independent, or fighting, but be your own without the anchor of failed love holding you down.

Know your worth.
